Up The Road

P-One update 2.0

More on the P-One situation.  Trek plans to turn on P-One with the new Madone in late summer. One of the driving factors in this delay is that we have chosen to fill standard Madone back orders before we started offering custom painted Madones.  If we turn on P-One today, it will further delay the delivery of standard bikes that customers have already paid for.

The good news is that Trek's production of Madone bikes has never been higher.  We are shipping more product than ever before.

The new Madone set a new level of what you should expect in a road bike.  Its balanced design incorporates beauty, ride feel, unmatched stability, light weight and second-to-none technology and is worth the wait.

This is really disappointing. First it was promised to open January one. Now it's delayed until late into the riding season here in Minnesota. What is most disappointing is the poor planning and setting of expectations for the customers who probably spend the most with you. Being a loyal Trek rider, with six Trek bikes in the family and planning on another Project One this Spring, I find this delay to a real let down after thinking it would be possible to order one soon. I wonder how I can trust Trek now with this new announcement after already being mislead once?

I've got to say I am very disappointed. I have already ordered my Madone 6.5 pro and fully expected to get a project 1 paint job done but now it looks like that's not going to happen.

This is a bummer but I guess there are worse things in life that coule have happened. My only concern is this will force people to buy the Standard Madone rather than the Project One which I see as only delaying it further. I think Trek would have been much better off just taking the orders and quoting the lead times and letting the customers decide if they wanted to wait or not. Oh well I guess its time to buy the quads my kids have been bugging me for. I know the bike is worth the wait so I will just wait until next tax check.

I find it very disappointing that Trek could not produce a Project One Madone when needed. I had my Trek 5200 stolen in late November & have been without a bike since that time; therefore no training for now. I don't have the patience to wait & purchased a 2008 Specialized S-Works Roubaix; the bike is amazing & far better than my Trek 5200.

I currently own a Trek Madone 5.9 which is 2 years old. The bike performs well but I do plan on upgradng to a P-One 6.9 when the P-One option becomes available. The bad news is I won't be able to purchase the bike as soon as I orginally projected. The good news is I won't have to take a second mortage on the house snce I will have enough $$ saved by the time the P-One option becomes available!!! I know it will be worth the wait but waiting can sometimes be long and arduous. When life throws one a lemon, make lemonade :)

Wow. Sour grapes fellas. Can't get a P-One Madone so you get a stock Specialized?

Kudos for Trek on delivering bikes to those who really want them and taking the time to release P-One only when it's ready.

BTW-The Tour Down Under has some pix up and you can see the 5.2 Pro in action and in stock paint. Sweet!

Aaron

While the news of this delay are certainly disappointing to potential customers. I think it might be wise for Trek to release the paint schemes and prices that are scheduled to be used for the P-One. That way, a potential customer can make a good decision wheather to buy now (stock bike) or wait for that special paint scheme.- This helps retain some of the potential Trek buyers who are going else where. Is this possible within the next month or so? Scott?

I also think Trek is short-changing themselves by not providing multiple pictures and angles of their stock bikes- Many Trek dealers don't stock the 6.9 pro on their floors (i.e. cost) and I for one am not willing to drop over $ 6,000 based on one or two pictures of the said bike on the web site or catalog. Kudos on the reviews though.

Justin

This delay might kill me. First I had to wait forever for the chance to even see one of the new Madones. Then when the local shop got them a month ago, I put off buying one because I figured that P-One would be out soon.

I have to agree with Aaron. Why not release the P-one site and hold off on orders until you are ready full fill them? That would give us time to drool and take out second mortgages, sell cars, auction off our souls etc to pay for them.

Jeffrey Wells

Extremely disappointing to say the least. What next? Promise us all SRAM RED and decide to discontinue??? Come on TREK...

david

I am with Aaron and Justin on this. While these bikes are not available yet (as with others of the 2008 line-up), pictures and graphics can be posted just as the other bikes that are not available yet.

Buying a stock Specialized because the custom Treks were not available?! You have got to be kidding me! The evidence of deficiency in logic here is astounding and irrefutable.

Toby

I've been slavishly checking the Trek site for Madone news every 1-2 days since the announcement of the new bike. I've ridden a 2200 for years and am ready to jump to carbon. It's between the 5.2, the 5.5, and a Cervelo, and I'll be ready to buy as soon as the weather in Wisconsin warms up enough for some test rides. I am not crazy about the stock Madone paint schemes, so unless I hate the Cervelo's ride I might be unwilling to wait for P-One. At least give us some teaser photos of future P-One options, as Aaron suggests; come on!

Ben

I have a suggestion for Trek: why not just provide basic paint options for each Madone model? For example, offer the 6.5 pro in the standard red/black scheme AND in the carbon/silver scheme available on the 6.5 performance. The 6.5 pro is my favorite component-wise, I just don't like the color. I don't particularly want a pricier paint job just to avoid the standard paint job. Yes, I could buy the frameset for the 6.9 pro and build it up, but I have done this before on previous bikes, and it rarely makes economic sense.

If readers here agree with me, speak up! Maybe we can convince Trek to provide more paint options w/o going P-one. At the least, it may be a good stopgap solution before project one arrives.

Mike

I am really disappointed, of course I dont have as much money as I used to and will have to wait anyway, this works out okay.
I think the least they should do is at least release the designs. I understand they may not be able to fulfill the orders but at least let us look at the designs and then decided if we want to buy or not. Maybe if it is ugly designs then they can get enough feedback and change them, if they are really good designs then people would be willing to wait. One thing I wish they could do is have us send in old frames and pay to have them repainted. I have a great carbon frame already and a new paint job would be awesome!!!!

I can empathize with the frustration my fellow riders are experiencing. I put off buying a new bike (following an accident in early '07) once I saw pics of the new madone. That was months and months ago and I’m still riding a 'beater' bike while I wait for the P-One range to be released…
If in fact, (as Scott D. suggests) the main factor contributing to the later-than-expected release of the P-One range is demand for standard madones being greater than the production facility can pump-out, then wouldn't it be fair to assume that prior to Jan 1, the designs were all ready and rearing to go, just waiting for some frames to bring them to life?? PLEASE Trek put us all out of our misery and release the designs soon so we can all make educated decisions, order a standard madone now or wait (what feels like an eternity) for the P-One options later in the year.

i've ridden a 1989 660 for many years now and have been waiting for the new madone project one to come out. so its nothing for me to wait a little bit longer. its like training a bit harder til the great ride arrives.

Paul

Trek really let us down this time...but at least the Astana team has their bicycles! It appears that Trek was more concerned about keeping the Astana team satisfied than taking care of it's loyal customers. You lost me as a customer & I have purchased several Trek bicycles over the past few years!

Frank

I have been waiting for the release of the P-one since the new Madone was announced last year. I couldn't wait for the release in January!! Now we gethave to wait until "late summer"??@!!
I agree with Ben I think at least 2 paint options per bike would be a great idea. I also think the idea of releasing the paint options and pricing for the P-one would give us all some actual images to decide if we want to wait for the p one to finally arrive. I'm also not sure I can wait for another 6 months just to order the P-one and possibly not take delivery until after the riding season is over. I really wish the marketing geniuses at Trek would at least consider some options. I think they are in real danger of losing a lot of potential (and current) customers with only one paint scheme per model and no P-One options for over a year from introduction. PLEASE listen to us Trek!!

Sam

What a let down. Surely you folks should had data that showed the expected response to the intro of this model. So apprently you were caught on your heels. Now we consumers have to decide whether we miss most of the riding season if we want a Madone. The stock colors totally lack imagination. I'm not sure its worth the wait.

T

I have to echo all that is being said here...

1. Just variations on standard paint colors would be a huge step forward for Trek...i.e. the 6.9 with more than 1 choice...whatever happened to the orange/black original scheme shown in catalogs and online? Even the basic silver/black is nice...when someone is looking to spend $6,000-$8,000 on a bike, some options would be fantastic...and they don't have to be polka dots and lines and darts and stars and...well, you get my point.

2. Showing at least conceptually what the ProjectOne schemes might look like so people can make a decision whether they see something they want to wait for or whether the best option might even be to go ahead with a stock choice.

I understand that logistical concerns arise...but at least looking at these options will give your loyal customers something to look forward to and allow new customers to see what Trek really has to offer!

scott

Guys,
Your response sounds like you let one of the presidential candidates craft it for you....how ridiculous is that ? You are asking folks to wait the entire riding season to BUY what you SELL ?? And to all of you who made fun of those who gave up and bought a "stock" specialized....well, what do you expect ? I hve been waiting for over a year to order this bike, and spent countless hours picking a color scheme...however, today O too bought an S-Works. Very poor product and process management...shame on you ...
